A world within a crater wall

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, its 600-metre walls enclosing grassland, soda lake, swamp and acacia forest. Around 25,000 large animals live on the floor year round, including some of the last black rhino in northern Tanzania, alongside big-maned lion, elephant bulls with heavy ivory, and vast flocks of flamingo on Lake Magadi.

Descend at first light for a half or full day on the floor. Grassland, the Lerai fever tree forest and the Gorigor swamp hold predators and prey in unusually close quarters, making sightings remarkably reliable.

Things to do

Ngorongoro Crater experiences

A day in the crater is a day of density — predators, plains game and rhino within a single sweep of the floor. Above the rim, the highlands offer a slower, more cultural counterpoint.

FAQ

Where is the Ngorongoro Crater?

The crater lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, between Lake Manyara and the Serengeti, about three hours by road from Arusha.

How long should I spend there?

Most journeys include one or two nights on the rim, with a half or full day on the crater floor. It pairs naturally with Tarangire and the Serengeti.

Is the crater busy?

It is the most visited site on the northern circuit. Descending at opening time and staying out over the middle of the day keeps you ahead of most vehicles.
